Chapter Eleven

Hendrix

I walked around with no place in mind. I didn’t know where I was going so, I couldn’t really have a place to go. Lalbert was no Melbourne. It was more like a big town rather than a city. It had everything that someone could need, but as far as places to get lost in, there wasn’t a place. Unless you counted the forested areas that seemed to surround the town. I could get lost in there.

One thing I discovered is the supernatural population was by far greater than what I’d been expecting. It seemed just about every second person was supernatural. I passed a huge building that looked like a school. A guy stood out the front and tipped his head to me. I gave him a quick wave and kept moving. Beside the school was the police precinct. I kept my head down and moved past there quickly. I hadn’t had much luck with cops. Maybe Lalbert’s cops were a little different, but in Melbourne, most of them were pricks who looked down their noses at supernatural junkies.

Beyond that, there was a plethora of stores, clothing stores, tattoo salons, cafes, and a supermarket. The town was bustling even for being as small as it was. I’d slowly wandered past every store and looked in the window. Brenton’s offer was still firmly in my mind. If I got clean, I could perhaps get a job, I could do something with my life. I might even one day set down roots. The sheer thought of that filled me with disbelief.

If the people who got their hands on me as a kid could see me thinking like that, they’d beat the shit out of me. But the truth is that they weren’t here anymore. I hadn’t been around them in an exceptionally long time. For the first time in my entire life, I was free. I was in a place where no one knew me. No one knew my past. I could become anybody that I wanted to be.

I kept walking through the streets until my stomach started to growl again, reminding me that I had only eaten what Brenton made me in the last few days. I walked back along the main street before coming across a small café called Tabby’s. It looked like it would be an affordable place to eat. I still had twenty dollars in my pocket.

“Hi there, are you gonna come in?” a woman with a bright smile asked.

I bit in my bottom lip and nodded my head. “I’ve got, twenty dollars, what can I get for that?” I asked her quietly as a blush covered my cheeks.

The woman smiled and waved me over to a booth seat. “You pick whatever you like on there, it’s on me today. I’m Tabby. What’s your name?”

“Oh, I can pay, I just need to know what is cheap, I um, I can’t read very well,” I explained with embarrassment.

“What’s your name?” she asked again.

I ducked my head. “Hendrix.”

“It’s lovely to meet you, Hendrix, now, I can highly recommend our chicken burger and fries.
